Alin Coen Band
When Alin Coen sings, everyone falls silent. It is a magical silence, and all the listener can do is sit back and admire – admire the fragility in her voice, which is what gives the enchanting pop-folk of this petite singer-songstress its unique quality. Sentimentality that tugs at the heartstrings.
The 29-year-old has been making waves for quite a while. A member of the popular Alin Coen Band since 2007, she has played her way to an established spot in the German-language singer-songwriter scene. “It’s constantly moving forwards”, says the singer, who for the last three years has used her tours to reach a wider audience, and in April 2011 received the Gema German Songwriter Award.
She sometimes sings in English and sometimes in German. “The languages inspire me to write different melodies”, explains Coen, the daughter of a Mexican artist and German doctor. A girl who grew up in Hamburg and loves travelling the world, she says that to her “they both sound right”. This is evident from her albums, all of which feature songs in German and English. “I take an intuitive approach to choosing the language as well as in writing my music and lyrics.” The same goes for the big emotions she conveys in her songs about hoping and failing, loving and letting go – emotions that can be based just as much on her own experiences as the touching stories she reads in the newspaper.
The thing closest to her heart is her musical development. “As a band we haven’t set a goal for ourselves – what matters is that it stays interesting.”
