‘Glück Auf!’ arts festival
The Ruhr region launched its event-packed year as the 2010 European Capital of Culture with a two-day arts festival held at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Mine in Essen. On 9 January, under the ‘thousand fires’ banner, artists working in all genres transformed the outside grounds of this former cathedral of industry into a nocturnal city of culture.
A non-stop programme of entertainment featured high-profile guests on the main outdoor stage, performances in all halls and venues at the colliery and Zollverein coking plant, and a firework spectacular.
On 10 January, the new Ruhr Museum in the former Zollverein coal washery opened to the public for the first time. The exhibition offers an insight into the natural, cultural and social history of the Ruhr region. In celebration of the day, the Ruhr Museum staged a programme of variety, comedy and music in all the Zollverein halls.
