German Design Awards presented at the Ambiente
The annual Ambiente in Frankfurt is the world’s largest consumer products fair and stages the award ceremony for Germany’s highest design prize. The prize winners truly are the cream of the crop – only designs that have already won national or international prizes can be entered in the competition.
The start of Ambiente 2010 saw the Pink Project, initiated by Brad Pitt, receive the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany. This aid project has a tragic background: the Lower Ninth Ward, an eastern suburb of New Orleans, was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Brad Pitt joined forces with GRAFT, a Berlin architecture company, to build a town of pink tents there.
Another 2010 winner was Ingo Maurer, the ‘conjurer of light’ and designer of the Münchner Freiheit underground station in Munich.
