Düsseldorf is at the helm of a trailblazing video art project in the shape of the recently-founded imai – the inter media art institute. As a public institution with a core mission of popularising the world of video art and making it accessible to an international audience – and ensuring the long-term future of this audio-visual art form – imai represents a first in the history of video art and a first for Germany.

With its sales programme, through which more than 1,200 works can be purchased or loaned out, the 3,200-strong collection is among the most significant of its kind. The bulk of the institute’s single-channel works, video installations and video performances may be accessed and played in their entirety free of charge and at any time of day or night via the online catalogue at www.imaionline.de.

The institute also works with academic institutions and academies to initiate and support research projects in the field of media art.
