AZKM Contemporary Art Exhibition Hall, Münster

On 27 June 2009, the AZKM celebrated its fifth anniversary in Speicher II, a converted grain silo offering 1,000 square metres of project space beside the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Münster. Since its refurbishment, the venue has offered a platform for exhibitions and discussion in the genre of contemporary fine art.

The exhibition hall serves as a production site and laboratory, a place for risk-taking and experimental art. Central to the project is the presentation and discussion of current trends in contemporary art, and the AZKM exhibition programme draws on the full breadth and variety of today’s fine arts scene at international level.

In the past five years, Münster has been able to show work by renowned artists such as Monika Baer, Phil Collins, Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler, Laura Owens, Ugo Rondinone, Markus Schinwald, Joëlle Tuerlinckx and Willem Oorebeek. In 2006, the exhibition ‘Monika Baer: Paintings & Works on Paper (1992 – 2005)’ was included among the world’s top ten exhibitions in Art Forum International’s annual list.

The AZKM stages one or two inhouse exhibitions every year, featuring international artists in situ. Most of its other projects are organised in partnership with partner galleries, museums and art centres in other countries, such as the University of Houston’s Blaffer Gallery, Camden Arts Centre in London, the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, and Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne. The AZKM is currently preparing a solo exhibition of Josephine Meckseper’s work for October 2010, in cooperation with the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art Zurich.
